Alfredson's artistic view on vampire-ism
Is vampire-ism a word? I think I just made it one. Regardless, this is so incredibly artistic, the tone can be surmised from the opening shot of the movie. Just a clean 30 second shot of the sky and snow falling. It's quite, artistic, and maybe to some, a little slow. But if it was faster paced, it wouldn't have been as well done.
What I really enjoyed was the fact that the director and writers decided to focus more on the romance between Oskar and Eli, so that violence and blood was kind of like and afterthought. It does have some violent scenes. But they're not like typical violence. The bloodshed is controlled, the graphic scenes of human deformity are very pitiful and painful. This movie makes you uncomfortable, not squeamish. Like I said, this movie is artistic, a deliberate amount of time is spent on shots of the snow, the blood dripping down the face of Eli, and the awkward scenes of middle scholl bullying.
All in all, this movie is still a better love story then Twilight.

Scream-o-meter6-Uncomfortable and pitiful scenes, with frightening and creative shots of horror.
Its interesting how, for lack of a better word, tame, the violence is. We see the beginning of the act being committed, and the the after affects. There is a suicide, but its quick, but also very uncomfortable to watch, I had to turn away, but I could still hear it. Making that scene even worse. Not too horrific but still hard to watch. Well worth seeing |
ClassificationThis movie only has a little bit of gore, and even then is clean and controlled instead of everywhere like most other gore movies.
This is an artistic horror movie, beautifully done scenes. A quick flash of the color red, just to remind the audience of what Eli truly is. I guess we could call this an artistic horror gore movie, but that just doesn't sound right. Gore described as artistic, hard to believe, but once you see this movie, you'll understand. |
Trivia
In every shot there is the color red or orange red, which refers to the blood that Eli has to drink.
The title Let the Right on In, comes from vampire lore: a vampire has to be invited into your house, and once you grant them entrance, they can come in whenever they like.
The title is also from a song called Let the Right One Slip in, by Morrissey.
This movie, like most of the movies in Fear Fest, was originally a novel. The author wrote the screenplay for this movie, and decided to focus on the relationship between Oskar and Eli rather then the violence and gore of a vampire's life.
A few of you may have heard of the American version of this movie, called Let Me In, with Chloe Mortez.
